5 Tips For Improving Your Posture

5 Tips For Improving Your Posture

What is "good" posture exactly? Posture is integral to your overall health - one could argue it’s just as important as diet and exercise. Practicing proper posture will give you more energy, less stress, and less fatigue. As Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the Japanese martial art of aikido, puts it, "A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind."

Without having proper posture, there are chances that your overall health can be affected negatively. In an effort to keep you as healthy as can be, below are 5 tips that will help you improve your posture. Don’t forget to take a peek at our GuardLab Lower Performance Mouthguard, too! The Performance guard enhances your athletic performance through stabilization and balancing of the head and neck muscles, supporting full body alignment. Did you know that the lower jaw harnesses the power to balance your head and neck muscles? There are sixty-eight pairs of muscles above and below the lower jaw that determine head, neck, jaw and shoulder posturing. A balanced jaw can influence the balance and position of the head and neck, which supports optimal body posture all the way down the body. GuardLab mouthguards are made with ARC Technology, designed to optimize the alignment of the lower jaw, so they are a great piece of equipment for maintaining ideal posture while exercising out to get the most out of your training.

1. One of the most important aspects of having optimal body posture is to make sure that you’re not sitting the whole day. Whether you are at work or at home, sometimes you may just want to relax and sit. In order to maintain a healthy posture, try to stand up for a couple of minutes every half hour and stretch, walk, or just stand.

2. If there are times when you have no other option but to sit in a chair, it’s important to maintain a strong back. Make sure you are sitting up straight with your shoulders dropped. This may not be the easiest thing to do and may need some practice, but it will allow you to focus on your body awareness which will eventually lead to having a better body alignment.

3. Vitamin D is one of the most essential vitamins for healthy living and it helps maintain your muscles as well. Having a good Vitamin D intake will help your muscles relax and assist with improving your posture. Our skin can generate large amounts of Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight so take a walk outside on your lunch break and catch some rays!

4. Doing the right exercises will also help with improving your posture. Light weight bearing exercises, including stair climbing and weight lifting, will improve your body position. Simply walking a little more has also shown to improve stability in people’s posture over time.

5. Strengthen your core! You’ve likely heard this before: the "core" are the muscles of your abdomen and pelvic area. The muscles in this region are the main foundation of an ideal posture. By strengthening your core, you will improve other aspects of your health that will assist with living a healthier lifestyle.

Who knew posture was so important? Stand, sit and walk tall; you deserve it!
